Meta Title: Why Are Adult Teeth Coming In Behind Baby Teeth? | Lubbock Orthodontist
Meta Description: Learn why adult teeth sometimes erupt behind baby teeth, when parents should be concerned, and when to schedule an orthodontic evaluation in Lubbock, TX.
Why Are My Child’s Adult Teeth Coming In Behind Their Baby Teeth?
One of the most common questions we hear at Parker Wentz Orthodontics is:
“My child’s adult teeth are coming in behind their baby teeth. Is something wrong?”
Parents in Lubbock often notice this happening around ages 6–8 when the lower permanent front teeth begin erupting. Because the permanent teeth appear behind the baby teeth, many people refer to them as “shark teeth.”
While it may look concerning, it is often a normal part of development. However, some children benefit from an early orthodontic evaluation to determine whether additional treatment may be needed.
What Causes Shark Teeth?
Adult teeth normally develop beneath baby teeth and gradually push them out as they erupt. Sometimes the permanent teeth take a slightly different path and emerge behind the baby teeth instead.
This can occur because of:
- Delayed loss of baby teeth
- Mild to severe crowding
- Differences in jaw growth
- Genetics
- Limited space for permanent teeth
In many cases, the baby teeth will loosen naturally and the permanent teeth will gradually move forward into a more ideal position.
When Should Parents Be Concerned?
Although shark teeth are common, there are situations where an orthodontic evaluation may be beneficial.
Consider scheduling an evaluation if:
- Baby teeth remain firmly attached for several months after permanent teeth erupt
- Significant crowding is present
- Teeth appear blocked out of the arch
- Your child has a crossbite
- You notice uneven jaw growth
- Multiple permanent teeth are erupting in unusual positions
At Parker Wentz Orthodontics, we use advanced digital imaging and CBCT technology to evaluate tooth development and determine whether observation or treatment is the best option.
Do Shark Teeth Mean My Child Will Need Braces?
Not necessarily.
Many children with shark teeth never require early treatment. Others may benefit from monitoring growth and development through our Early Orthodontic Treatment program.
The goal is not to place braces on every child. Instead, we want to identify developing problems before they become more difficult to correct.
Often, the best treatment recommendation is simply to monitor growth and re-evaluate periodically.
Why Age 7 Is Important
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
At this age, a board-certified orthodontist can evaluate:
- Jaw growth
- Eruption patterns
- Available space for permanent teeth
- Bite development
- Airway development
Early evaluations help identify concerns before they become more complicated.

Could Airway Development Play a Role?
In some children, narrow dental arches and limited jaw development can contribute to crowding and eruption issues.
For certain patients, treatment options such as expansion or our Healthy Start Program may be considered when appropriate.
Every child is different, which is why a personalized evaluation is important.
Treatment Options for Growing Children
