Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies can happen, but with a little preparation, most issues can be managed at home until you can visit our office. Whether it’s a problem with your appliances or a direct injury to your mouth, this guide will help you navigate the situation.

Orthodontic Appliance Emergencies

During your orthodontic treatment, appliances can occasionally become broken or bent. If this happens, don’t worry—most situations can be temporarily resolved with simple remedies until we see you.

Common Appliance Issues and Temporary Fixes

  • Irritating Tie Wire:
Cover the wire with orthodontic wax or beeswax. Alternatively, gently tuck the wire under the archwire using a pencil eraser or a Q-tip.

  • Loose Band or Bracket:
Leave it in place and call our office during patient hours to schedule a repair. We’ll reattach it if necessary.

  • Broken or Poking Archwire:
Carefully bend the wire into a more comfortable position with a pencil eraser. If the wire is too long, you can clip it with clean nail clippers. Be sure to contact our office if the issue persists.

Important Note: For your convenience and to ensure smooth patient care, we do not handle emergencies on a walk-in basis. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you sustain a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment or not, follow these steps:

  1. Apply Ice: Immediately ice the injured area to reduce swelling.
  2. Contact Your Dentist: Call your family dentist as soon as possible. An x-ray may be needed to assess the extent of the injury.
  3. Orthodontic Adjustments: If your braces or appliances are damaged during the injury, visit us after consulting your dentist. We’ll replace or adjust your appliances to ensure your treatment stays on track.

Examples of Direct Injuries:

  • Displaced, knocked-out, or fractured teeth
  • Appliances dislodged or bent due to trauma

After-Hours Emergencies

If an orthodontic emergency occurs after office hours and causes significant discomfort or pain, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our office provides detailed information on who to contact for assistance outside of normal patient hours.
