Early Orthodontics

When Should Your Child Visit an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7. At this age, Dr. Parker Wentz can evaluate your child’s dental development and determine the ideal time for treatment if necessary. In some cases, your dentist may refer you to our office earlier than age 7 if they notice potential orthodontic concerns.

Why Are Early Orthodontic Evaluations Important?

Early orthodontic assessments provide numerous benefits, including:

  • Guiding erupting teeth into better positions.
  • Preserving space for permanent teeth.
  • Reducing the risk of fracturing protruding front teeth.

When early treatment is indicated, Dr. Wentz can also address broader dental and jaw development needs, such as:

  • Shaping the jaw’s growth and regulating dental arch width.
  • Preventing the need for permanent tooth extractions.
  • Minimizing the likelihood of impacted teeth.
  • Correcting habits like thumb-sucking.
  • Addressing speech or swallowing issues.

Early intervention simplifies future treatment after all permanent teeth have emerged, ensuring optimal dental health and growth.

Is Early Treatment Necessary for Every Child?

Not every child benefits from early treatment. Some orthodontic issues are better addressed during the teen years once all permanent teeth have erupted. Skeletal problems, for instance, may require treatment when growth is more advanced or complete.

At Parker Wentz Orthodontics, we design treatment plans for your child’s unique needs. If treatment isn’t needed immediately, your child can join our Orthodontic Supervisory Program. However, it’s crucial to have an evaluation by age 7 to monitor development and determine the best course of action.

What Is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?

This program is designed for children who are not yet ready for orthodontic treatment. It allows us to:

  • Monitor the eruption of permanent teeth.
  • Address poor eruption patterns early, potentially shortening future treatment time.
  • Collaborate with your family dentist to ensure a smooth progression of dental development.

Patients in this program typically visit us every 6–8 months. There’s no cost to participate, and it helps ensure treatment begins at the optimal time for the best results.

The Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment offers more than just a beautiful smile. It also:

  • Improves bite function.
  • Enhances the ability to clean teeth effectively.
  • Reduces wear and tear on teeth.
  • Promotes the longevity of natural teeth over a lifetime.

Does Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces Later?

Early treatment addresses significant issues early on, preventing them from worsening and simplifying future care. However, because permanent teeth haven’t fully erupted during early treatment, a follow-up comprehensive treatment phase (Phase II – full braces) may still be needed during adolescence to complete the alignment process. In some cases, early treatment alone may be sufficient.

Should My Child Still See Their Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?

Yes! Maintaining routine dental visits is essential during orthodontic care. Braces and appliances require extra effort to keep teeth and gums clean, so regular check-ups and cleanings with your family dentist every six months are highly recommended to ensure optimal oral health.
