One of the most common questions we hear at Parker Wentz Orthodontics is: “Do braces hurt?”
If you or your child are considering braces or clear aligners, it’s completely normal to wonder what the experience will feel like. The good news is that while there can be some mild discomfort at times, orthodontic treatment is very manageable—and most patients adjust quickly.
What Does Getting Braces Feel Like?
When braces are first placed, most patients do not feel pain during the appointment itself. Afterward, you may notice a feeling of pressure or mild soreness as your teeth begin to move.
This is a normal and expected part of the process.
What to Expect in the First Few Days
During the first few days after getting braces, you may experience:
- Mild tenderness when biting or chewing
- A feeling of pressure in your teeth
- Slight irritation on the inside of your cheeks or lips
This usually improves within a few days as your mouth adjusts.
Do Braces Hurt After Adjustments?
At certain appointments, we make small adjustments to keep your treatment progressing. After these visits, it’s normal to feel:
- Light pressure for 1–2 days
- Minor soreness when eating certain foods
Again, this is temporary and a sign that your teeth are moving into a healthier position.
How to Stay Comfortable During Treatment
There are a few simple ways to stay comfortable while your mouth adjusts:
- Stick to softer foods for a day or two after adjustments
- Use orthodontic wax if anything feels irritating
- Stay consistent with your oral hygiene routine
Most patients find that any discomfort fades quickly and becomes easier with time.
Braces Are More Comfortable Than Ever
Modern orthodontic technology has made braces and clear aligners more comfortable than ever before. At Parker Wentz Orthodontics, we take extra care to ensure your experience is as smooth and comfortable as possible from start to finish.
