Many parents assume orthodontic treatment begins in the teenage years after all the permanent teeth have erupted. While that is true for many patients, some orthodontic problems are much easier to treat when caught early.
At Parker Wentz Orthodontics, we believe orthodontics is about more than just straight teeth. Proper jaw development, bite function, airway health, and facial growth all play an important role in a child’s long-term health and confidence.
Here are 7 signs your child may benefit from an orthodontic evaluation earlier than expected.
1. Mouth Breathing
Does your child frequently breathe through their mouth instead of their nose?
Chronic mouth breathing can sometimes be associated with narrow jaws, improper tongue posture, airway concerns, and bite problems. It may also contribute to poor sleep quality and altered facial development over time.
An orthodontic evaluation can help determine whether jaw development or expansion may be beneficial.
2. Crowded or Blocked-Out Teeth
If permanent teeth are erupting crooked, overlapping, or blocked out, it may indicate there is not enough room in the jaws.
Early orthodontic treatment can sometimes help guide jaw growth and create space for erupting teeth, potentially reducing the need for future extractions.
3. Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth
Baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. Losing them too early — or retaining them too long — can affect how permanent teeth erupt.
Monitoring eruption patterns is an important part of early orthodontic care.
4. Difficulty Chewing or Biting
If your child struggles to bite into foods, chews unevenly, or complains about jaw discomfort, it may point toward a bite issue that should be evaluated.
Problems such as crossbites, deep bites, and narrow arches are often easier to correct when children are still growing.
5. Snoring or Poor Sleep
Many parents are surprised to learn that orthodontics can sometimes play a role in airway and sleep health.
Children who snore regularly, grind their teeth at night, toss and turn during sleep, or seem tired during the day may benefit from a more comprehensive evaluation of their airway and jaw development.
6. Thumb Sucking or Tongue Habits
Extended thumb sucking or tongue thrusting habits can affect jaw growth and tooth alignment over time.
The earlier these habits are addressed, the better chance we have to minimize long-term bite changes.
7. Impacted or Missing Teeth
Sometimes adult teeth become trapped beneath the gums and cannot erupt properly on their own. Impacted canines are especially common and often require early monitoring with X-rays and orthodontic guidance.
Early detection can simplify treatment and improve outcomes.
When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7.
This does NOT mean every child needs braces at age 7. In fact, many children simply benefit from monitoring growth and development over time.
